It’s an incredible experience when the capercaillies arrive at the lekking site and you’re lying low in your sleeping bag, waiting for them to start their characteristic display. When the first booming calls are heard just outside the tent, your whole body tingles, and you almost dare not breathe.
One of the most exciting experiences in the spring forest is the capercaillie lek. There are many lek sites, but finding a good one is not easy. Ask a local, and it’s often difficult to get any information. At Natur & Foto, we know someone willing to guide us to an amazing lek deep in the forests of Snåsa, Trøndelag. The lek is located high in the terrain, in an open, beautiful old pine forest.
Each participant will have their own tent. We need to settle in by 9:00 PM at the latest. The capercaillies arrive at the lek shortly after and remain in their feeding pines until around 3:30 AM. Then they descend to the ground and begin their display, which lasts until the morning light, around 9:30 AM.
After the lek, we head down to Eggen Farm, which serves as our base. Here, you can download files, charge batteries, shower, and if you want to relax, every participant has a bed to stretch out on.
Not only do you get to experience three mornings of capercaillie lekking, but you’ll also get a taste of Snåsa. Our local partner uses regional ingredients and personally prepares the meals. Just enjoying the delicious food at the farm is an experience in itself.
