Explore the rainforests of Tangkoko National Park on Sulawesi to encounter the charismatic Sulawesi macaque and the nocturnal tarsier. Finally, sail to Komodo and photograph the world’s largest lizard, the Komodo dragon.

Facts about Indonesia

Indonesia is a republic made up of 17,508 islands in Southeast Asia, located between Australia and the Asian mainland. About 6,000 of these islands are inhabited. The six largest and most populous islands are Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Bali, Kalimantan, and West Papua.

With a population of approximately 237.5 million, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and has the largest Muslim population globally. It shares borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Malaysia. The capital city, Jakarta, is located on the island of Java.

Situated in a region where three tectonic plates meet, Indonesia has many mountains and volcanoes. Around 220 of its volcanoes are active. The country’s highest point is Puncak Jaya on New Guinea, reaching 4,884 meters.
